Join us as a Cambridge Festival of Cycling volunteer

The Cambridge Festival of Cycling is back again this September celebrating the city’s incredible cycling culture. With even more events this year, we can’t wait to meet even more people and celebrate even more aspects of cycling, from history and science to picnics and road rides. But we need your help to help make the festival amazing.

If you think you can help support the Festival of Cycling, please get in touch with Camcycle at contact@camcycle.org.uk with the subject heading ‘Festival Volunteering’. We’d love to hear from you.

Here are some of our key events you can get involved with…

Camcycle’s Social Ride to Milton Country Park

Sunday 1 September
11am-3pm

This is the launch of the Festival of Cycling, so it’s a really special event. We are inviting anyone and everyone to meet at The Guildhall at 11am, where we will begin a lovely, leisurely, scenic ride along the river up to and through Milton Country Park. At the park we will sit down together for a huge picnic, where people will have a chance to meet and chat to other members of the Cambridge community, fellow cyclists, the Camcycle team, as well as spending quality time with friends and family on what will hopefully be a lovely summer’s day.

To help with the event we need:

  • Ride marshals to guide the ride and wait at specified catch-up locations
  • First aiders
  • Stall bike volunteers to talk about Camcycle and cycling at the Camcycle stall bike
  • Social media volunteers to tweet, instagram, and post on facebook during/after the event
  • Blog and article writers to write about the event afterwards
  • Photographers to take photos of the ride and the picnic

CamcycleTech: Exploring the Science and Technology of Cycling

Saturday 7 September
10am-4pm

This is a brand-new event for the Festival of Cycling, which we’re really excited about. We will be celebrating the enduring technology of the bicycle which liberated people in the past and offer us sustainable transport in the future. We’re working with the Museum of Technology and the Cavendish Lab to create a day of interactive cycle-centred activities, alongside all the Museum’s permanent displaysActivities include virtual reality cycle racing, a gears workshop and a bicycle physics investigation area. There will also be bicycle themed craft activities, a cafe filled with delicious family-friendly food and speakers talking on subject like ‘how to build a bike frame’.

To help with the event we need:

  • First aiders
  • Stall bike volunteers to give event information and to talk about Camcycle and cycling at the Camcycle stall bike
  • General volunteers to help with set up/clean up and small operational tasks to help the event run smoothly
  • Social media volunteers to tweet, instagram, and post on facebook during/after the event
  • Blog and article writers to write about the event afterwards
  • Photographers to take photos of the activities, talks and exhibitions

After the incredible success of last year’s carnival, our flagship Cargo Carnival event is back, and bigger and better than ever. There will be a happy parade of cargo cyclists showing the city of Cambridge everything that can be carried on a bike. Meeting at 11am at Lammas Land, we’ll take a short ride through the city centre back to Lammas Land, where we’ll pull up for a fair. There will be delicious food and drinks, a spacious cargo bike try-out arena and many other cargo bike stalls.

To help with the event we need:

  • First aiders
  • Marshals to guide the parade ride
  • General volunteers to help with set up/clean up and small operational tasks to help the event run smoothly
  • Stall bike volunteers to give event information and to talk about Camcycle and cycling at the Camcycle stall bike

Camcycle’s MOTHERLOAD Movie Screening

Saturday 28 September
3pm-5.30pm

Last year we screened the ‘Why We Cycle’ film at Storey’s Field Centre. This year we are screening the crowdsourced documentary MOTHERLOAD at the Clay Farm Centre. MOTHERLOAD celebrates the history and power of the cargo cycle and asks whether it might just be the antidote to the problems of consumerism, isolation and the digital age. In the spirit of cargo cycles, before the screening there will be the opportunity to grab some mac and cheese from the Mac Daddy trike and some drinks from the Beanissimo Coffee trike.

To help with the event we need:

  • Box office volunteers to scan e-tickets and sell tickets on the door
  • A first aider
  • General volunteers to help with set up/clean up and small operational tasks to help the event run smoothly
  • Stall bike volunteers to give event information and to talk about Camcycle and cycling at the Camcycle stall bike
  • Social media volunteers to tweet, instagram, and post on facebook during/after the event
  • Blog and article writers to write about the event afterwards
  • Photographers to take photos of the cargo traders and the screening
